The Lyceum team enjoyed two games, unfortunately the results didn't go our way although we fought hard and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. After winning the toss in our first game, we sent the Cholmeleians XI in to bat. After a restrained start the Cholmeleians really accelerated during the middle overs and ended up posting a demanding but not out of reach total of 142/4 from their 20 overs. For the Lyceum team Kevin impressed with the ball picking up 2 valuable wickets in his 3 over spell. The Lyceum reply started in a determined fashion however we fell behind the required run rate early on and were playing catch up after just a few overs. At the halfway point, with the score just 40, something exceptional was required with over 100 runs needed from the next 10 overs. Soon after this, the Lyceum Fives Assistant was joined at the crease by our Cricket Assistant and the run rate steadily accelerated. Boundaries were scored and the top name bowler from the Cholmeleians team was taken for a huge 39 runs from just two overs setting up a tense finale. Unfortunately Tom lost his wicket with another 40 runs still required, however Mr Jones was quick to step in and blast some timely boundaries. The last over arrived and 16 runs were required for victory, a very difficult task indeed, but not impossible! Unfortunately we came up just short in the end but it was a fantastic effort from the team and made for a thrilling spectacle on the St Moritz Lake! (Game Summary - Full Scorecard)
For our second match on Saturday we fielded a changed side, with many staff and Old Boys stepping up. Batting first and trying to exploit the firm early morning conditions the Lyceum side lost wickets at regular intervals and couldn't quite push the total up to the target of around 140, however a vital last wicket partnership between two past students of the Lyceum pushed the score up past the 100 mark setting up a competitive total. The Winterthur team came out blasting with an impressive display of hitting taking the score to 49 after just 5 overs. From then on it was always going to be difficult but the Lyceum team fought valiantly, taking wickets and containing the batsmen to force the game close and take it into the last few overs. Special mention must be made of Dr. Schmitt who finished with the incredible bowling figures of 4 overs, 4 wickets for just 16 runs in a display of bowling that, if sometimes a bit erratic, was certainly always interesting to watch! Overall it was an incredible experience for those involved, and this truly is a unique event! Cricket has many fantastic and fascinating elements and these were all on show in St Moritz this year. The camaraderie between the teams was fantastic, and the subtleties of cricket were put in the spotlight with the unusual pitch conditions constantly challenging both bowlers and batsmen. We are already looking forward to next year...
